Honda has joined a demonstration project for experimental vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology with its Accord Plug-in Hybrid model.

The project aims to provide a potentially valuable energy storage resource for the U.S. electrical grid while offering a more cost-effective ownership for plug-in electric vehicles. The research is being conducted by the University of Delaware and supported by NRG Energy, Inc. The two came up with the world’s first revenue generating V2G project earlier this year.

As for Honda’s contribution to the program, a Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid has been outfitted with V2G capabilities and is being supplied to the University’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus to investigate the potential of V2G to benefit the electrical grid, vehicle owners and society as a whole.

Equipped with a bi-directional on board charger, the Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid is able to use its vehicle propulsion battery to both charge from and discharge to the electrical grid. Thanks to an additional communication device, the vehicle is able to receive signals from a grid operator at a charging station who can control charge and discharge according to those signals.
